Veneers

Dental Veneers

Veneers are thin, custom-made shells attached to the surface of the teeth to improve their appearance. These shells are fabricated to match your desired color, shape, and size.

Dental veneers can be made from different materials. Your dentist will guide you and help you determine the right specifications for your situation.

At Westwood Dental, we offer veneer services to help you transform your smile the way you want. Connect with us to book your consultation with our dentist.

How Can Dental Veneers Help?

Dental veneers are cosmetic dental restorations that can help address the following:

  • Tooth discoloration
  • Uneven tooth shape
  • Chipped or broken tooth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Worn down tooth

What Happens During the Veneer Procedure?

Getting veneers usually requires two dental visits, assuming you have completed your initial consultation and exams. If veneers are the right option for your case, the first visit will be about preparing and taking impressions of your teeth.

Veneers require space, so a small portion of the enamel will be removed at the front and on the sides of the teeth. Then, your dentist takes an impression of the prepared teeth. You and your dentist also determine the best shade for the shell to achieve a natural look.

Afterward, the impression is sent to the dental lab, where the custom veneers are made. This can take several days. To protect your teeth while waiting, you wear temporary veneers.

On your second visit, the temporary veneers are removed and the new veneers are attached. Your dentist checks their fit and shape and makes needed adjustments before they're permanently bonded to the teeth.

Your dentist may also ask you to return after a couple of weeks to check the condition of your veneers.

Pros and Cons of Getting Veneers

Like any procedure, veneers also have their pros and cons. Here's a quick list:

Pros

  • Enhances enamel appearance. Veneers offer a quick solution to stained, misshapen, or damaged teeth. They can mask imperfections to make your teeth look more attractive.
  • Natural-looking. You're not limited to a single shade since the material used for veneers can be customized. You can ensure that the restoration looks like your natural teeth. You work with your dentist to design your veneers the way you like them.
  • Stain resistant. Veneers can resist stains, which helps them maintain their appearance. They're also durable and require only a small amount of teeth surfaces to be filed. They can last for up to 10-15 years with proper care.

Cons

  • Irreversible. Veneers are a permanent restoration. They're fixed to your teeth, so once they're bonded, there's no turning back. You need to look into the risks and limitations involved to make sure you're ready for the procedure. At our dental office, we educate you about each procedure so you can weigh your options and make confident decisions.
  • Can come off. The tooth where the veneers are attached can decay without good oral hygiene. This can cause the shells to fall off or chip. It's important to take care of your oral health so you can make the most of your dental restoration. Putting too much pressure on the teeth can also lead to chips or damage, so be cautious when eating and don't use your teeth as a substitute for tools.

If you're planning to whiten your teeth, it's best to do so before getting veneers. Once the veneers are attached, they'll no longer be able to match the shade of your whitened teeth. Whitening doesn't take effect on veneers.
