Placement & Restoration

Missing teeth can have negative effects on your oral health and well-being. Leaving the gaps empty for a long time can cause adjacent teeth to move, throw your bite out of balance, and lead to jaw and facial pain. The change in your smile can also affect your confidence and self-esteem.

Nonetheless, you can correct the problem with the help of dental professionals. An implant offers a permanent, natural-looking solution to missing teeth. At Westwood Dental, we provide this service, and we're happy to share more information about it during your visit.

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a titanium post attached to the jawbone via surgery. It replaces the root of the tooth and fuses with the jawbone. This makes it a sturdy foundation for the replacement tooth. Aside from securing your new tooth, an implant can also serve as support for bridges and dentures.

What Are the Steps Involved in a Dental Implant Procedure?

A dental implant procedure usually comes in three stages: attaching the implants, placing the abutment, and affixing the dental prosthetic or artificial tooth.

Implant placement can take up to an hour for a single implant. The duration and number of appointments vary per individual. Your dentist will discuss sedation options before surgery. A local anesthetic will also be administered to numb the treatment area.

Your surgeon makes a small cut in the gum tissue to expose the bone. Then, the titanium implant is inserted. Afterward, you wait until the site heals, which can take up to 6 months. Your dental team will provide care instructions for smooth healing and recovery.

You may need to return for follow-up checks so your surgeon can also assess if you're ready to move to the second phase of the treatment.

The next step is fitting the abutment into the implant. From there, the site is allowed to heal first. On your last visit, the prosthetic is attached to the abutment. Your surgeon fits it in your mouth to ensure it looks natural and holds up well.

And your implant restoration is complete! You only need to make periodic dental visits so your dental team can monitor your progress and check the condition of your new smile.
